Whats YOUR Input?

At the Trade Show I suggested we make a 'graffiti board' to gather community input. It is a great way to do field research on a certain question. We used the board to ask what the elders, youth, parents, leaders, and community agencies wanted to see from our programs. We asked for their ideas on what THEY want to see in the community, and it was a great result, both in regards to answering our questions but also citizens were extremely pleased that we were asking their opinions.

Edmonton Court

Friday morning we were called up to court in Edmonton for 2 of our clients. After court we did follow up with one of our funders for our suicide prevention programs.

The Trade Show

The Trade Show was a 2 day event that was held in the community. It was a chance for the different organizations around the community to showcase themselves, as well as get to know other organizations and community members. We had 2 booths, one for Maskwacis Justice, and another for Girl Guides. We sold cupcakes to fundraise, as well as did airbrush tattoos. Also, we had a free draw and our give away was the little bags (See Photo).

Inside each bag was Mint, Tea for a relaxant, and a Rock to symbolize protection. The Bags were beaded with the 4 colours.

Golf Excursion !

This tuesday was the Samson Cree Economic Development Golf Tournament at Wolfcreek golf course. This was a great opportunity to meet many people and organizations in the community while representing Maskwacis Justice Society. It was very much a 'Capacity Building' experience.
Fun day, but I think for now on I'll leave the golfing for the golfers.

Trade show prep, and a gift!

All afternoon today we went and gathered everything we needed for next weeks trade show, and putting stuff together.
We are giving out little bags, which I will show the completed version later, but in each will contain a rock. These rocks are for protection, and by carrying these rocks with you, you will be safe. In one of the bags I found a rock that was shaped like a heart, later the other workers here at the office came and gave me the heart rock, as well as this amazing beaded key chain :) .
We also all gathered for bannock with the elders during lunch!

Let the reading, Begin.

Welcome to my office :)

Our Building

Week 1 !

So I am just finishing my last day of work of my first week here in Hobbema!  It has certainly been an interesting week, with a LOT of learning.
Highlight of the week- Finding out I get to go to CALIFORNIA for a conference in june!
Throughout the week I have managed to read through many many many reports. I read about the programs here that Maskwacis Justice Society runs, all of which aimed to involve the community, engage in positive lifestyles, as well as provide an alternate outlet for youth.
I also read about Native courts that have been put together throughout the province. An ongoing project here is to have a Native Court in place here in Hobbema, I am extremely interested in this, and hope to do some work in this area throughout my summer.
I also spent a day in Wetaskiwin court, which is a little different then court in Camrose. I sat in on the main court room, where it was easy to see the differences in offences but also in the consequences for the offenders. I also was able to head upstairs to the high court,  and just tour around the court house.  I was taken into the legal library, where apparently I will be spending a good chunk of time researching throughout the summer.
Beyond this I was taken around parts of the community, just to get shown around and meet some people. Everyone here is really friendly and it is sure nice getting to meet people!
I have been reading more in the office. One thing that was really nice was that the staff here make lunch for the elders, and then we all go sit and eat together, which I thought was really nice :).
Next week, we are taking part in a 2 day community trade show, so for the rest of the day we are getting materials and getting everything prepared!
